“Everything the Lord said, we will do…” Exodus 19:8

It is not difficult to talk at the present about the future, vowing to obey the Lord and fulfill what we say.

The future always contains an element of daydreaming unless at the present time we work through a certain proposition in our heart and will and take the necessary steps to form an appropriate attitude for the future, because the time will come when we have to face the rugged facts of reality. That is when it shows how well we are prepared to face a situation that concerns us, the amount of inner strength we have, the way in which we deal with it, whether we will actually overcome or not.

Concerning the story we read from Exodus all the people then answered with one voice, promising to God through Moses that they would do everything they were commanded to do. However, it only remained to be seen later, when they were to face the actual conditions and circumstances of life, whether their words would be fulfilled or not. If in the process of being tried and tested their response would equal their promise.

Let us read what the Bible teaches us on this and how it seriously warns us against light talk and learn from the Lord how to work out our salvation through the circumstances of our everyday life.

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God; to draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools; for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven, and you upon earth; therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it; for He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to vow and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin, nor say before the angel of God that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at what you say and destroy the work of your hands? For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

(Ecclesiastes 5:1-7)

If you will have to face a certain problem or a situation, take time with the Lord to form the right attitude in your heart and your will. Overcome and take the victory in your heart. Defeat every aspect of the situation that comes your way. See the thing through to the end and take a stand, capturing every thought into the obedience to Christ (II Cor. 10: 4-5), Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the craftiness of the Devil .. And having done all to stand .. (Ephesians 6:11,13). The primary battle is being fought and the victory won in our heart and our will primarily.  (Proverbs 4:23). If so, when you will have to face the reality, you will not be intimidated, nor will you retreat but will rather move forward with courage based on faith. (Hebrews 10:35-39). There are those who are drawn back in fear to their loss, but there are also those who go through in reality and obtain the promises of God who are not just daydreaming but in reality and in truth…

You will not be of those who, depending on their own strength and ability, say confidently “You shall not be like those, who trusting in their own power, will confidently say: Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.. and so they boast in their arrogance, but you shall be as those whom, believing in the Lord with fear and trembling, work out their salvation because God acts in them to will and to do for His good pleasure. (James 4:13-17 and Philippians 2:12-13).
